A Thanksgiving Recipe for Fans of NPR – and Chicago’s Spa Space

We know from conversations we hear floating around the spa in downtown Chicago that some of our clients are faithful fans of NPR – that National Public Radio, for those of you who haven’t had the pleasure yet. NPR is probably best known for its news shows but there’s also a really funny “news quiz” show called Wait, Wait Don’t Tell Me that is recorded right here in Chicago. That’s definitely the favorite among the techs and massage therapists here at Spa Space (could it be that our sense of humor is part of the reason we’ve been voted best spa in Chicago?).

Anyone who has ever listened to “Morning Edition” on Chicago’s public radio station – WBEZ 91.5 FM – at this time of year has probably heard Susan Stamberg talk about her mother-in-law’s recipe for cranberry relish. “It sounds terrible but tastes terrific,” Stamberg has said countless times when talking about the Pepto Bismol-pink dish. It’s a perennial favorite – on the air and at the Stamberg Thanksgiving dinner table, at least.

Mama Stamberg’s Cranberry Relish

2 cups whole raw cranberries, washed
1 small onion
3/4 cup sour cream
1/2 cup sugar
2 tablespoons horseradish from a jar (“red is a bit milder than white”)

Grind the raw berries and onion together. (“I use an old-fashioned meat grinder,” says Stamberg. “I’m sure there’s a setting on the food processor that will give you a chunky grind — not a puree.”)

Add everything else and mix.

Put in a plastic container and freeze.

Early Thanksgiving morning, move it from freezer to refrigerator compartment to thaw. (“It should still have some little icy slivers left.”)

The relish will be thick, creamy, and shocking pink. (“OK, Pepto Bismol pink. It has a tangy taste that cuts through and perks up the turkey and gravy. It’s also good on next-day turkey sandwiches, and with roast beef,” Stamberg says.)

Makes 1 ½ pints.

Listeners may think of Susan Stamberg and her family when the recipe is mentioned but, according to NPR, Stamberg’s mother-in-law got the recipe from a 1959 New York Times clipping of Craig Claiborne’s recipe for cranberry relish. As they report, “In 1993, Claiborne told Stamberg: ‘Susan, I am simply delighted. We have gotten more mileage, you and I, out of that recipe than almost anything I’ve printed.’”

How Does It Work?

Qi is the life force that is present in each of us. If you have a bad back or you still get angry every time you think of your ex, your qi (it can also be spelled ch’i, but either way, it’s pronounced chee) is out of balance. Depending on what ails you, a trained and licensed acupuncturist will place needles at specific meridian points on your body to facilitate the flow of qui. A key component of traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture effectively treats a range of common ailments, including back and muscular pain, insomnia, headaches, fatigue, anxiety, and much more.

As far as facial acupuncture goes, those who believe in traditional Chinese medicine, credit the results to the flow of qi throughout the body. There are Western experts, on the other hand, who believe the treatment is effective because it stimulates the production of collagen. You can look at it as win-win.

Our team will be working hard in the coming weeks. Mother’s Day is always a busy time for us! It turns out that in Thailand, they give jasmine. In Japan, it’s carnations. In Brazil, only Christmas tops Mother’s Day in terms of the kind of money that gets spent on gifts. Egypt and a number of other Arab countries celebrate Mother’s Day on March 21, the first day of spring.

Time did some reporting on Mother’s Day Around the World. According to them, this is how some other countries celebrate:

  • “As early as the 16th century, the U.K. observed on the fourth Sunday of Lent a day called Mothering Sunday, when families came together to attend church. In the early 20th century, Mothering Sunday—which had evolved into a tradition of spending family time at home—was fused with the Hallmark-card-giving American holiday, but it has retained its traditional name and date (March 15 this year),” they report.
  • Apparently, Mother’s Day is a big deal in Mexico. It always falls on May 10 – regardless of the day of the week. Restaurants are packed, flowers are given and music fills the air. According to Time, the celebration often includes, “a morning serenade of the song ‘Las Mananitas’ from mariachi singers.
  • In Russia, Time says, “Mothers were celebrated on International Women’s Day on March 8, a celebratory date that has since become an internationally-observed day to honor women and reflect on the goal for gender equality. In 1998, post-Soviet Russia introduced Mother’s Day on the last Sunday in November, but most of the gift giving still happens in March.”

If there’s one thing Chicago knows how to do, it’s throw a St. Patrick’s Day party.

Of course, this time of year, we don’t need much of an excuse to celebrate – at least we don’t here at Spa Space, which was voted the best spa in Chicago (again!). If the sun came out or the temperature rose above 20, everyone in our spa in downtown Chicago breaks out in a happy dance.

Back to the point… If you were among the throngs celebrating the wearing of the green – and among the many celebrants who perhaps overdid it when it came to green beer or pints of Guinness – you may be interested to know that there are hangover cures… for your skin.

It’s true!  According to Well+Good, your skin gets hangovers, too.

Mona Gohara, MD, a Danbury, CT-based dermatologist, told the magazine, “Having a hangover is like being chased by a bear—it triggers the same response in your body. That includes a cortisol spike and dehydration to all non vital organs—like skin.”

Well+Good points out that you really should prep your skin in advance, if you know a big celebration is in your future. Start days in advance hydrating inside and out.
