Employee Motivation at Chicago’s Best Day Spa

Employee Motivation at Chicago’s Best Day Spa

If you are in management or own a small business, you know how challenging it can be to inspire and motivate today’s workforce.  Millennials are into one thing, Generation Z wants something else and everyone who came before them have different expectations! It seems like you need a rulebook to know how to make your team motivated and productive.

Why should you even care about employee motivation? According to Gallup’s 2017 State of the American Workplace report,  State of the American Workplace report, nearly 70 percent of American workers aren’t engaged.

“It’s a sad fact but the majority of employees are not engaged and haven’t been for a long time,” Jeff Corbin said in a blog post at TheEmployeeApp.com http://www.theemployeeapp.com/gallup-2017-employee-engagement-report-results-nothing-changed/. “In 2016, only 33% of employees in the United States were engaged, and employee engagement as a whole increased only 3% from 2012-2016. These findings underscore the impact that employee engagement has when it comes to the overall success of U.S. organizations. In fact, in the first iteration of the Gallup report, Gallup found that disengaged employees cost the country somewhere between $450 and $550 billion each year.”

Whether your workers prefer Millennial pink or Gen Z yellow or the colorblind fashions of the Baby Boomer generation, there is a common denominator when it comes to motivation and engagement. As Margaret Jacoby, the founder and president of MJ Management Solutions, said in a Huffington Post article https://www.huffingtonpost.com/margaret-jacoby/top-5-ways-to-motivate-yo_b_5839504.html, “Happy workers are productive workers.”

That may seem to oversimplify the situation but stop and think about it for a minute.  There are things that will make just about anyone happy.  “Luckily, motivating your employees doesn’t take a lot of flare or even a lot of resources,” Jacoby says. “In fact, it could require you to just schedule a few minutes on your schedule to say ‘hi.'”

Jacoby offers a few tips that may help you motivate your employees:

  • Empower Them
“Give your employees more of a say in how they do their job. Ask for their input and get suggestions on how they can improve their performance. Most employees have ideas about how they can be more efficient, but they may not share them with you unless you specifically ask them.”
  • Communicate Better
“The importance of employee communications is often overlooked,” she says. “You should communicate with them frequently, and actually speak with them face-to-face. Your staff needs to know they are valued, and communicating in person with them is the best way to show your appreciation for their hard work.”
  • Be an Example
“Lead by example,” Jacoby advises. “If you show your excitement about the company’s goals, your employees will get on-board and work to achieve those goals. Good moods are always infectious — especially in the workplace.”
