Full disclosure. Some of our Chicago spa’s massage therapists are big believers in making New Year’s resolutions – others, not so much. Whichever camp you fall into is fine – no judgement here! But whether you choose to make resolutions or simply believe that you can do more for your mental and physical health as well as your overall wellbeing, there are some things we think you might find helpful to keep in mind.
Tips for Keeping Your Resolutions
If you’re not into resolutions, you can mentally substitute “achieving your goals” for “keeping your resolutions.” Either way, you want to start off by being realistic. For example, whether you frame it as a goal or a resolution, you’re not going to lose 50 pounds in a month.
“Make resolutions that you think you can keep,” the experts at the American Psychological Association say. “If, for example, your aim is to exercise more frequently, schedule three or four days a week at the gym instead of seven. If you would like to eat healthier, try replacing dessert with something else you enjoy, like fruit or yogurt, instead of seeing your diet as a form of punishment.”
It’s also important to break down your goals/resolutions into practical steps. Don’t focus simply on the big picture, think about how you’re going to get there. If you want to get in better shape this year, that’s an awesome resolution/goal – but how are you going to do it? Thinking about the big picture can be a little daunting, but if you break it down it can be much more manageable. You could start out by walking for 30 minutes before or after work three times a week or pledging to hit the gym at least twice a week.
