The experts at Health.com went on to say, “The researchers found that both partners’ well being, perceived stress, and coping abilities improved after each rubdown. “Of course, when you’re on the receiving end of a massage, it makes sense that you’ll reap these benefits. What’s really interesting, the study authors say, is that physical and emotional well being for both partners—the giver and the receiver—surged after each massage session.”

“Contrary to popular Western belief, acupuncture is not just a system for inserting very fine needles into specific body locations to alleviate pain,” says Andrew Weil, M.D., a world-renowned leader and pioneer in the field of integrative medicine. “Acupuncture is a complete medical protocol focused on correcting imbalances of energy in the body. From its inception in China more than 2,500 years ago, acupuncture has been used traditionally to prevent, diagnose and treat disease, as well as to improve general health.”

Acupuncture is based on the traditional concept of qi (pronounced “chee”), an essential life force that circulates through the body. When qi flows freely, the body is healthy. Dis-ease is the result when the flow of qi is impaired. Extremely thin, sterile needles are superficially inserted into the skin at key points, known as acu-points, to stimulate the free flow of qi.

Dr. Weil believes there is more than traditional wisdom behind the effectiveness of acupuncture. “Research published in the May 30, 2010 online edition of Nature Neuroscience demonstrated that the effects of acupuncture needling include influencing the activity of adenosine, an amino acid which becomes active in the skin after an injury to ease pain. This may explain in part why pain relief is often experienced as one of the benefits of acupuncture,” he says on his website. “In fact, much research in the West has focused on this pain-relieving effect, rather than acupuncture’s traditional role of balancing energy to address a wide range of disorders, and the more subtle mechanisms that may be responsible for its overall benefits to health.”

August Is Happiness Happens Month

“Happiness is elusive because there isn’t an exact recipe for it, no matter how much we want one and how many scientific studies are done to help us understand happiness,” says Pamela Gail Johnson, founder the Secret Society of Happy People (SOHP). “Happiness is one of those experiences that we just know when it happens. If you need to think about whether you’re happy, you probably aren’t at that moment.”

Johnson wondered if it’s even possible to define something that sounds so simple, yet, is obviously complex. “Before starting the Society I tried more ‘get happy’ philosophy or how-to programs from the spiritual to the cognitive than I can remember. Although, I’m blessed with happy genetics, so I naturally see the brighter side of life, I wanted life to be happy all of the time.

“What I learned was that, although you can’t be happy all of the time, you can be happy most of the time,” she says. “You just need to recognize more of the happiness that’s already happening.”
To celebrate the first birthday the Society declared August 8, Admit You’re Happy Day, later changing the name to Happiness Happens Day. The holiday is based on the idea that happiness is unlimited. It is also contagious, so sharing your happiness may bring joy to other people’s lives.

SOHP now celebrates the entire month of August as Happiness Happens Month. And the U.N. has set aside March 20 as the International Day of Happiness.
