Every year the National Retail Federation surveys Americans about their Valentine’s Day plans. This year, things are looking up for love. According to the 2018 NRF survey, which was conducted by Prosper Insights & Analytics, total spending for Valentine’s Day is expected to reach $19.6 billion – that’s up from $18.2 billion last year.

One of the most interesting findings in the report had to with what we’re planning to give that special someone. Sure, candy and flowers are still popular choices, but almost a quarter of Americans who will be getting something for their sweetie this year (23.7%), plan to give a gift of experience. What’s even more interesting is that the NRF says, “42.3% say they would love to receive one.”

That means almost 20% of people receiving a gift are going to be, if not heartbroken, at least disappointed. Don’t let your Valentine be one of them! Give the gift of a spa experience from Spa Space.

The Pluses of Prenatal Massage

February is the month of love, right? And, as we all know, we experience many kinds of love during our lives – romantic love, friendship, family, even pets. If you’re pregnant, you’re experiencing a very special kind of love. And if someone asked you to describe it, we bet you’d have a hard time finding the right words. Suffice it to say the love you feel for the baby you’re going to have this year is already off the charts.

 

For many women, prenatal massage has proven to be a welcome addition to their wellness routine. At Spa Space, the place for innovative and therapeutic spa massage in Chicago, we are proud to offer specialized Prenatal Massage.

 

According to the American Pregnancy Association (APA), which promotes pregnancy wellness, “Studies indicate that massage therapy performed during pregnancy can reduce anxiety, decrease symptoms of depression, relieve muscle aches and joint pains, and improve labor outcomes and newborn health.”

 

The APA recommends Swedish massage over other methods of massage because of its ability to alleviate the discomforts that may be associated with the amazing changes taking place in your body. (At Spa Space, we care about your wellbeing – that’s part of what makes us the best spa in Chicago for expectant mothers. We want you to know that Prenatal Massage won’t be for everyone. Please check with your obstetrician to see what she recommends.)

 

What makes Swedish massage so special? Unlike deep tissue massage, which targets connective tissue in an effort to facilitate movement, the unique movements associated with Swedish massage can improve circulation of both blood and your lymphatic system while also relaxing your muscles. (And, in case you’re wondering – it wasn’t developed in Sweden! According to Livestrong, the method was developed Johan Georg Mezger, who was Dutch.)

 

It’s not just that Swedish massage makes you feel good – which it does (especially at Spa Space where our massage therapists have the experience needed to work at any of the spas in Chicago but choose to work with us) – the practice has proven to be therapeutic. The American Pregnancy Association reports that, “Studies done in the past 10 years have shown that hormone levels associated with relaxation and stress are significantly altered when massage therapy is introduced to women’s prenatal care. This leads to mood regulation and improved cardiovascular health.”

 

The study looked at women who received bi-weekly massages for five weeks. During that time, the level of bad hormones, those associated with stress like cortisol, went down. The level of good hormones, particularly dopamine and serotonin, went up.

 

Redbook magazine pointed to studies done at the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami that showed prenatal massage, in addition to positively affecting hormone levels, “can reduce intra-uterine artery resistance.” In plain English that means massage makes it easier for your body to deliver essential nutrition and oxygen to your baby. “This can result in fewer premature deliveries and lower incidence of low birth weight,” Redbook reported.

 

And there’s more good news!

 

According to the APA, in addition to relieving stress and anxiety, Prenatal Massage can help reduce swelling, back pain, joint pain, muscle tension and headaches. Other benefits of Prenatal Massage cited by the American Pregnancy Association include:

 

  • Relief of the Sciatic nerve pain many women in late pregnancy
  • Improved circulation
  • Improved oxygenation of soft tissues and muscles
  • Better sleep

 

And get this – Redbook also said, “When pregnant women received a massage during labor, the labor was reduced by an average of three (!) hours.”

Thanks for mentioning the valet parking, LaJoe! You’ll find it on Canal St. right in front of Spa Space, where you can enjoy Chicago massages, facials, mani-pedis and more seven days a week. They currently charge a flat rate of $18. Despite the fact that the valets are right in front of our doors, we have no formal business relationship with them, so we can’t guarantee their hours or rates. We can tell you that valet service is almost always available on Monday-Saturday during our business hours.

 

On weekends, you can park your car right across the street from Chicago’s best spa! There’s an indoor lot that only charges $10 for an all-day rate on Saturday and Sunday.  We’re not sure if they’ll charge the weekend rate on Presidents’ Day. If not, their regular rate is $14 for up to 2 hours Monday through Friday. The entrance is on the west side of Canal St., just south of Lake St.

 

And, of course, you may be able to find metered street parking on Canal, Lake or Clinton. You’ll have the best chance of grabbing a spot on the weekends. You don’t want to be worrying about running out of time while you’re enjoying one of the best facials in Chicago, that’s why we suggest downloading the ParkChicago app, where you can pay for parking and extend your time remotely if desired.

Natalie opened Spa Space, consistently ranked among the top tier of Chicago spas, more than 15 years ago, wanting to take an ordinary day and transform it into something special for the Chicgoans she passed on the street every day.

When you’re looking for a great place to get massages or facials in Chicago, you don’t usually think about who owns or manages the spa. Spa Space is a great place for couples massage and is also known as a great men’s spa, but the majority of our clientele are women. And we thought you might be interested to know just a little bit about the amazing women behind Spa Space.

 

Natalie Tessler founded Spa Space back in 2001, with the dream of creating the best day spa in Chicago. That hadn’t always been her dream, though.

 

Natalie has a BA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a law degree from American University and an LL.M. (Master’s of Law degree) in taxation from New York University. She found that the life of a tax and estate planning attorney wasn’t making her happy, so she dusted off her childhood dream of owning her own business and started doing some research on the wellness and day spa industries. As she once explained in an interview, while she was a lawyer she was always surrounded by people who didn’t particularly want to be there – whether that be clients dealing with difficult legal matters or the other lawyers. Natalie wanted something completely different. “A spa is a place where people really love to go, a place where people really want to be, and a place where people want to work,” she said.

 

These days, Natalie enjoys speaking to students, entrepreneurs and angel investors about raising capital, developing a business plan and what entrepreneurship really entails.

 

In addition to owning Chicago massage spa Spa Space, Ilana Craig Alberico serves as the CEO and is the Co-Founder/Owner of Innovative Spa Management (ISM) – a company that has landed on Inc. Magazine’s list of Fastest Growing Companies twice, in 2013 and 2014.

 

Ilana and her partner, Christina Stratton, started ISM in Asheville, North Carolina. The company specializes in executing spas that seamlessly weave concept throughout the design, operations, employee training programs, product selection, and menu. Her company ultimately provides financially secure and profitable operations dedicated to superior service.

 

Ilana oversees the vision, direction and operations of the company. She writes articles on spa design, development, and operations and teaches management and employee training programs at spa industry conferences and at the ISM Academy. A massage therapist and former spa director, she is passionate about treatment and dedicated to creating the optimal spa experience.

 

In other words, Ilana is an expert when it comes to spas. And she has brought her expertise to Spa Space, one of the best spas in Chicago, where you can look forward to an exceptional spa experience.

 

Ilana, whose parents grew their own organic food, got her start in the spa industry in her hometown of Asheville, North Carolina. After college in South Carolina, she went back to Asheville. After learning just how hard it is to earn a living with a pottery studio, she found a job at a local resort. You guessed it, the job was in the spa. She picked up towels, greeted guests and couldn’t help but notice the change that would come over people after their spa treatment. She wanted to be able to relieve people of their stress and add something special to their day.

 

She quickly became a licensed massage therapist and before you know it, she was managing the spa.
