Stress is nothing new. Your life might have been stressful before the pandemic hit. Before there were day spas in Chicago, people had plenty of things to be stressed about (like the lack of spas in Chicago!). Heck, as far back as you can imagine, there was stress. 

There was a famous Calgon television commercial from the 1970s that you might (or might not!) recall that featured a stressed-out working mother who just couldn’t take it anymore. Winter did not want to release its grip on Chicago this year. What Is Facial Acupuncture?

Qi is the life force that is present in each of us. If you have a bad back or you still get angry every time you think of your ex, your qi (it can also be spelled ch’i, but either way, it’s pronounced chee) is out of balance. Depending on what ails you, a trained and licensed acupuncturist will place needles at specific meridian points on your body to facilitate the flow of qui. A key component of traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture effectively treats a range of common ailments, including back and muscular pain, insomnia, headaches, fatigue, anxiety, and much more.

As far as facial acupuncture goes, those who believe in traditional Chinese medicine, credit the results to the flow of qi throughout the body. The people who work at Spa Space are amazing. (Just because we’re biased, doesn’t mean it isn’t true.) They are the reason we have been named the best day spa in Chicago. Their mothers should be very proud of them.

Our team will be working hard in the coming weeks. Mother’s Day is always a busy time for us! We have clients calling because they want to give their mom a spa day – complete with ultra-relaxing Chicago massages and revitalizing facials – and they want to share it with them. Others want their mothers to have the fun of looking over all the delicious spa treatments on our full menu of services, so they opt for gift certificates.

We think the world of our moms! We think the world of your mom! And we wondered what the world thinks about Mother’s Day.

It turns out that in Thailand, they give jasmine. In Japan, it’s carnations. In Brazil, only Christmas tops Mother’s Day in terms of the kind of money that gets spent on gifts. Egypt and a number of other Arab countries celebrate Mother’s Day on March 21, the first day of spring.

Time did some reporting on Mother’s Day Around the World. According to them, this is how some other countries celebrate:

  • “As early as the 16th century, the U.K. observed on the fourth Sunday of Lent a day called Mothering Sunday, when families came together to attend church. In the early 20th century, Mothering Sunday—which had evolved into a tradition of spending family time at home—was fused with the Hallmark-card-giving American holiday, but it has retained its traditional name and date (March 15 this year),” they report.
  • Apparently, Mother’s Day is a big deal in Mexico. It always falls on May 10 – regardless of the day of the week. Restaurants are packed, flowers are given and music fills the air. According to Time, the celebration often includes, “a morning serenade of the song ‘Las Mananitas’ from mariachi singers.
  • In Russia, Time says, “Mothers were celebrated on International Women’s Day on March 8, a celebratory date that has since become an internationally-observed day to honor women and reflect on the goal for gender equality. In 1998, post-Soviet Russia introduced Mother’s Day on the last Sunday in November, but most of the gift giving still happens in March.”

If there’s one thing Chicago knows how to do, it’s throw a St. Patrick’s Day party.

Of course, this time of year, we don’t need much of an excuse to celebrate – at least we don’t here at Spa Space, which was voted the best spa in Chicago (again!). If the sun came out or the temperature rose above 20, everyone in our spa in downtown Chicago breaks out in a happy dance.

Back to the point… If you were among the throngs celebrating the wearing of the green – and among the many celebrants who perhaps overdid it when it came to green beer or pints of Guinness – you may be interested to know that there are hangover cures… for your skin.

It’s true!  According to Well+Good, your skin gets hangovers, too.

Mona Gohara, MD, a Danbury, CT-based dermatologist, told the magazine, “Having a hangover is like being chased by a bear—it triggers the same response in your body. That includes a cortisol spike and dehydration to all non vital organs—like skin.”

Well+Good points out that you really should prep your skin in advance, if you know a big celebration is in your future. Start days in advance hydrating inside and out. If the damage has already been done, Well+Good reports that it usually takes about 24 hours for your body to recover. To help with the process, they say:
